Description
ONION SKINS (Allium cepa): Dried outer skins of ordinary onions, used for strong light-fast and wash-fast yellows on all fibers. Onions are native to Asia, Europe, North America and Siberia. No written dye history as a dye, but many early European dyers used this cheap, handy dyestuff as a substitute for saffron yellow. Onion skins are offered as a service for those who don’t wish to grub in their local supermarket produce bins. We now get our onion skins from India, since getting good color from USA onion skins depends on the time of year the onions were picked, how long they were in storage, and whether they were gassed to keep them fresh-looking.

Alum mordant: yellow to golden yellow
Copper mordant: dull yellow
Iron mordant: yellow-brown to rust-brown
Tin mordant: bright yellow.
